Web Design – Creation of Dominance

Last updated on June 11, 2011 By AllTheArticles Leave a Comment

For most of the novice web designers the only means to create dominance would be size. The simple logic behind this is that grater the size greater is visual impact. In fact, this is just one way to create maximum visual impact. There are other ways to maximize the visual impact and make the design of any element dominant over other elements of the website.

Some of the prominent ways to create dominance are as follows.

o Placement of the element
When you have a blank screen where do first see, whether to what is placed in the centre or on the periphery?  Usually it has been seen that the visitor pay attention to what is placed in the centre before seeing what is on the periphery. The placement of the element in the centre can be made dominant when other aspects such as color and white space are managed done thoroughly.

o Size matters
The human eye is usually drawn towards things that are bigger in size before paying attention to things that are smaller. As mentioned earlier greater the size of an element design greater is its dominance. This has been one of the most effective and easiest ways to create dominance. If all the element designs are of equal size none is going to be dominant and the chances of the visitor getting distracted increase.

o Color of the element
Since ages it has been seen that different colors have a different visual impact. Some colors like red seem to attract the onlooker from any distant. Red color is said to have the maximum visual impact. There are other colors like yellow which hardly have any visual impact. This implies that if you want to the element design to be dominant you need to use colors that maximize visual impact.

o Space management
There are two kinds of spaces positive space and negative space. The negative space does not have any element design and so is also called white space. The space with the element design is called positive space. Both the spaces have to be managed properly to create the dominant effect. Too much of positive space can mess up the layout. On the other hand too much of negative space could be a waste of resources. One can create a dominant element by surrounding the positive space by as much negative space as possible.

o Darker and lighter element design
When the background is white and the element design is in dark it creates a contrast. The magnitude of contrast decreases when the lighter element design is introduced on white background. This implies that if you want any element to be dominant it should be in darker and not lighter.

o Geometric shapes
The screen of you monitor is a rectangle. The black boards or the white boards which we have been watching since child hood are also a quadrilateral with sharp edges. When you want any element of the web design to be dominant it should have some unique shape and in this situation an element designed in circle can be very dominant just because it is different from the quadrilateral.

As the designer practices he/she masters the art of creating dominance.
