Web Design – Copying Versus Innovating

Last updated on June 14, 2011 By AllTheArticles Leave a Comment

At first glance copying and innovating sound to be antonyms and studying further, these aspects would seem trivial but when we analyze them we come to know their relevance.

First of all let us see what they mean. Copying means is aping or imitating something or some work that has been earlier done by someone else. On the other hand innovating means to bring some new change or doing something for the first time through a new technique. This implies that innovating is much superior to copy.

There has been a trend in every industry that some people innovated while the rest followed them by copying. This is because of basic human instinct “why to prepare or work when you can get it ready made?” This mentality has been prevailing since ages and human beings have got used to it. This applies to the web design industry too.

The aim of any web design is to convey information about the products or services offered, and finally convert the visitor into a buyer to generate revenue and sustain. Nowadays it does not matter whether you have copied or innovated provided the web site is successful and generates revenue. From the buyer’s perspective, receiving information is primary. The buyer does not care whether the web design has been copied or innovated. All that he/she is concerned is about getting the true worth and quality of product or service that he/she has paid for.

Most of the time people are used to seeing specific kinds of layouts on their monitors.  Take for example the case of menu bars and the navigation bars. Most of the people are used to see them horizontally aligned on the top of the website. There are people who would not mind if they are aligned vertically on the left side. If for the sake of innovation you try to present those bars in a circular pattern in the middle of the home page do you think that all your visitors are going to like it? So once the people are habituated to some pattern it is difficult to change it and there is less scope for innovation.

In this world there are many creative people that may have tried innovations at web design prior to you. Those who have been successful have seen their websites generate a lot of revenue as well as their website being copied. Prior to you a lot many innovative permutations and combinations may have been tried. This does not mean that there is no scope for innovations. This means only that the scope is limited.

Studies of website designing have revealed that people usually like something new. It is easy to remember a unique site rather than a copied website.  The stereotyped website make the visitors usually feel that their needs have not be properly addressed and the business does not care for them. For this purpose a bit of innovativeness needs to be brought in the web design.
