Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the biggest killers in the world. SCA is a condition that can strike anyone, anytime, anywhere. The worst part is that SCA happens without a warning.
To put it simply Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) happens when the heart stops pumping blood around the brain and around the body. Usually the cause is Arrhythmias, an abnormality in the heart’s electric system.
The Heart’s electric system controls the speed of your heartbeat. The electrical system in your heart includes a network of electrical pathways similar to the electrical wiring in your home. These pathways carry electrical signals through your heart and their movement makes it beat.
A healthy heart’s electrical system automatically responds to the body’s changing needs for oxygen. When you climb stairs, your heart rate speeds up which means your heart pumps faster to give the body more oxygen-rich blood.
Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is an unexpected failure in the heart’s electric system to effectively pump blood to the brain and around the body. The SCA victim first loses pulse, then consciousness and finally the ability to breathe. All of this happens within a few seconds. It should be noted however, that a heart attack is different from SCA. Heart attack is caused by a problem in the circulation or plumbing of the heart. This happens when one or more of the arteries that deliver blood to the heart are blocked.
This damage caused due to a heart attack can further lead to disturbances in the heart’s electrical system. A malfunction in the electric system can cause dangerously fast heart rhythms that can lead to SCA.
This means that without an immediate treatment, 90%-95% of SCA patients will die. Those who do luckily recover from it may suffer from a significant neurologic impairment and other problems.
Whenever someone suffers SCA, Defibrillation should be prompt to enable survival of the victim to get emergency medical help or reach a hospital. Defibrillation is applying a controlled shock within 5 minutes of collapse to ensure chances of survival. External defibrillators are often used in hospitals and ambulances.
But getting medical help on time in rural areas, country side places, crowded places, traffic congestions or remote areas with poor road networks is almost impossible.
This is where the Defibrillators also known as Automated External Defibrillators come to the rescue. AED’s as they are called in short are being increasingly used outside medical environments to ensure the survival of the victim of SCA before the arrival of any medical help.
