Immigration is the movement of people from one country to another in search of a better livelihood and lifestyle. Usually, it takes place from underdeveloped or developing country to a developed, super power country of the world. In this aspect, US is and has always been the preferred destination for immigrants since a very early time.
What Attracts People To The US?
Immigration to the US is a dream shared by many all over the world. People are always in search of better, high paying jobs; improvised lifestyle with better facilities and above all guaranteed security to their life. US offers all the above to the immigrants.
Immigration Process In The US
US Immigration laws are a bit complex and the process is indeed very time consuming. Though there are scores of illegal immigrants in the US, it is always advisable to complete all immigration procedures properly so as to enjoy the various benefits offered by the US Government to the immigrants. USCIS is the apex body which controls the immigration process. Immigration and Nationality Act( INA) is the law controlling immigration.
There are various classes of immigrants – artists, researchers, cultural exchange participants, religious workers, scientists, athletes, nurses, agricultural workers, students pursuing education, skilled workers, entrepreneurs, tourists and people who want to become US citizens in the near future. Even though the process varies for each of the category of immigrants, one common thing here is that all immigrants will be required to enter the US on an valid visa.
How does immigration contribute to the United States?
Immigration has been a primary source of population growth and cultural change throughout a great part of US history. Though there are positive aspects, economic, social, and political aspects of it have stirred quite a lot of controversy. US citizens and legal immigrants are raising their voices against the increasing crime rate and illegal immigrants. Majority of the immigrants to the US are from Mexico, India, Philippines and China.
Immigrating to the US is the first step in becoming a US citizen. Immigrants go on to adjust their status to that of a permanent resident and subsequently become Green Card holders. Many are comfortable with this status as they are able to live and work in the US without any issue. What these people tend to overlook is the benefits that they get to enjoy if they go on to become US citizens. Voting rights are conferred only upon US citizens and they can live without the fear of being deported (in case of any crime).
The attack on the World Trade Center that shook the world a few years ago and the recession slowed down the immigration figures to a great extent. This is not the present scenario as the number has been on the rise in spite of the US being threatened by various terrorist forces. Immigration statistics of 2006 has projected the US as the country accepting more legal immigrants as permanent residents than all other countries in the world. 1,042,625 persons were naturalized as US citizens in 2010; 24,000 during the Fourth of July (2011) celebrations.
