Identifying Your Advertising Medium

Last updated on August 27, 2011 By AllTheArticles Leave a Comment

All marketing mediums challenge business owners to determine what will yield the highest profit. With so many to choose, from social media to banner ads, print advertising and TV spots, it’s difficult to allocate where to spend your marketing dollars. The question you have to ask yourself is: Which medium reaches out to your target audience more appropriately?

Choosing the Right Advertising Medium

The manner in which you convey your information is just as important as the medium that you choose. With today’s constant exposure to media, it is crucial to plan your advertising in a way that elicits emotion, attracts attention and puts those who see it, in motion.Be specific about the goods and services offered in order for your branding to remain the same, regardless of the medium you choose.

Choosing the right medium comes down to understanding which one speaks to your target audience in the most effective way. Is your target audience socially engaged to where a social media campaign would be the best option? At Quaintise, we always strive beyond expectation toprove that integrated advertising is truly your best option, if your marketing budget calls for one medium and one only, you must ensure you chose the right one.

Different audiences discover ads in very different ways. Whether you use television, radio, print or internet advertising, you must be cognizant of your potential customers will perceive the ad. Entrepreneur.com refers to internet advertising as “more like billboards than ads.” What does this mean to the business owner? It means you have less space to “convey your message because computer users don’t want to read long copy”. In print ad, potential consumers have the document in hand and expect to read what is included.

When using television or radio advertisement you are likely to be more localized than the consumer you’ll connect with online. This is an important time to evaluate if your product/service is one that needs to be purchased or used locally. If you’re a restaurant or a car dealer, then the answer is likely yes. If you offer a consulting-type service than you can reach your audience through all three mediums – television, radio or Internet.

Medium Differences

Here are some of the differences regarding the audiences you will encounter when using television/radio and Internet advertising:

• The age of your audience: The Internet traditionally attracts a younger audience when compared to television and radio.

• The potential size of your “viewing” audience: The most obvious difference between radio and television advertising and Internet advertising is the reach. You need to weigh the pros and cons of reaching a larger audience before you make the final decision on which medium to utilize.

• The flexibility of your message: Let’s face it, once you submit your radio or television advertising, it is difficult – and costly – to go back and change the message. Advertising on the Internet offers you flexibility to go back and adjust the ad based on the response.

TV Advertising

You need to first determine the size and type of client you want to reach. Will this specific station attract a local audience? A certain demographic?A seasonal audience?Television is often chosen if you have a product or service that is new or complicated and lends itself to the use of “visual aids” to get the message across. (Keep in mind that many television watchers disengage during commercial breaks).

Radio Advertising

Radio listeners are likely to still hear your ad, even while multi-tasking. If you’re looking to capture their full attention, utilize the time of day in which you want to advertise.  There are significantly fewer consumers who listen to the radio later in the day. Radio audiences, however, have been found to be a more stable and reliable customer even though they are more reluctant to change their minds and pursue a new brand. Television and Internet audiences are more easily swayed.

Internet Advertising

When trying to grab the attention of an Internet audience, you need to advertise on a site at which your potential customer not only visits, but spends enough time to fully see your ad.

All the advertising mediums mention above bring with it their own pros and cons.  It’s up to each business to determine which works best for the goal they are trying to achieve as a way to garner market share and remain cost effective. Always remember to consider your brand, audience, and budget. Reach out to professionals in your area to help you make the most effective decision.
