Double Glazing Door Repairs – You don’t need a new door!

Last updated on December 12, 2014 By AllTheArticles Leave a Comment

Picture this, your door jams shut, you can’t open it and Christmas is around the corner. Pound signs ring up in the back of your mind as you think how much you cannot afford a new door. But is there another option? Do you really have to replace the door and can it be fixed?

Most door companies would bite your hand off and convince you that the door is old, the locking mechanism obsolete or the parts hard to find to try and get you to spend a little more, usually a lot more and buy a new door. After all there’s more money in it for them. What you have to try and do is find the company that specializes in repairs and that does not replace or install new windows and doors.

These type of companies are common. If they attend your home they can open your door and in most cases your window should it be jammed also without damaging it. That’s right. Your door should not be damaged in any way. That means no scratches, no gashes were the crowbar has been overly used (in fact if you see a crow bar appear kindly ask them to leave).

So how do they open the door?

The door is opened in a variety of ways using levers and air bags. It also helps to know how the locking mechanism works and if necessary how to kill the lock should you have to. For obvious reasons we can’t go into detail about this process.

When the door is open the company will identify the type of locking mechanism. So what if it is out of date? So what, if a company knows its business it will easily be able to source an alternative that will do the job with perhaps a little alteration to the door and frame. After all its not supposed to be easy is it?

So is that it then?

No, now it has to work correctly. Some companies might replace the mechanism try the operation and yeah that will do, thanks very much. What you want is a smooth action. You should not have to jiggle the handle to reach the locking point. The lever action should be easily operated within one smooth action. To achieve this the frame of the door has to be fully aligned to the door. Once this is achieved the door will have complete equilibrium.

So that’s that, old door, new mechanism and a new lease of life. Much better than a cheap door replacement with a short life span and hey you’ve saved money into the bargain!
